This Sacred Name of Smith [May. 1st, 2004|04:08 pm]

G.K. Chesterton is one of my favorite authors. He is the single most optimistic man I have ever met or heard tell of. This is a passage from Heretics which I (being a Smith) absolutely love.

"In the case of Smith, the name is so poetical that it must be an arduous and heroic matter for the man to live up to it. The name of Smith is the name of the one trade that even kings respected, it could claim half the glory of that arma virumque which all epics acclaimed. The spirit of the smithy is so close to the spirit of song that it has mixed in a million poems,"

What an honor [Apr. 30th, 2004|03:43 pm]

It would seem I get to make the first post in this community. And I'm not even the founder.

Well, I think I'll start with the obvious: my own name. I am Shawn Craig Smith.

Shawn is derived from the Hebrew name Yochanan (familiar to most of us as John). It means, "Yahweh is gracious."

Craig is a Scottish name meaning "from the Crag."

Smith, of course, means "a maker" and is as G.K. Chesterton noted, an ancient and honorable name. (More on that when I can find the pages I'd copied out Chesterton's Heretics).

Therefore (with a little selective definition), my name means "Yahweh is gracious from the hard place, a maker".

I like my name.
