Jesus is actually a Latinization of a Hebrew name. He would have responded to Yeshua (which is actually the same name as Joshua).|
Yeshua means "Yahweh is salvation." I've alternately heard it interpreted as "I AM [the meaning of Yahweh] powerful to save."
Christ is the Greek word for Messiah which means "anointed one."
So Jesus the Christ unfolds to I AM powerful to save, the anointed one.
This casts an especially interesting light on John 1:12. "Yet to all who recieved him, to those who believed his name, he gave the right to become children of God." What did those who believe his name believe? I AM powerful to save.
Just the musings of a Christian Onomastician.
Oh, and as an afterthought, come on people, you've got to know more interesting stuff about people's names. It doesn't have to be your name. It doesn't even have to be a friend's name. Just post something!
